Equator

This is a picture of us at the equator. The team is Rachel, Marina, Tim, me and Simon Peter. We cross the equator on the way between Kamplala and Rukungiri (which is im the SW of Uganda) - this is a trip we do every couple of weeks. They do this clever thing where you watch water go down the drain in one direction in the northern hemisphere and in the other direction in the southern hemisphere. If you stand on the equator it goes straight down. You need a cleverer person then me to expain why or how..... over to you.

Hello Linda. Good to hear you have arrived safely, if sleepless. I'm just starting the summer holidays, and am driving again which makes life so much easier. I'm also riding carefully, which is wonderful!
    Take good care of yourself,

    Hi Linda.

... not clever, just a meteorologist.

They'll tell you that rotating water is all to do with the Coriolis force, which is a visual effect; not a force at all. The effect is the same as that which causes low pressure weather systems to rotate anti-clockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the south.

However ... although the apparent force does change the direction of rotation at the equator, the size of the horizontal coriolis effect varies as sin(latitude) and is of almost zero size anywhere close to the equator. (There is a cosine component but I'd say it's insignificant.)

Sorry, I'd say it's a con ... but with just about enough science behind it to sound convincing!

See, you didn't really want to know did you!?

Hope all is well. I'll email properly soon.

    Love from M, S & K

Mmm well... I guess as long as it does go down the plug hole and no where else, why concern yourself! Just one of the wonderful ways our God has made this world of His. Byeee!

    Hi Linda

Unfortunately the body of water in a bath is not enough to be effected by the spin of the planet - while I was doing my elective in NZ I noticed water going down the plughole both clockwise and anticlockwise and after arriving home I noticed the same phenomenon (not where we live now however as we only have a shower!) Hope things are going ok!!!
